Do you already know the skincare basics?

Getting the fundamentals right makes all the difference. When you understand the simple steps behind cleansing, hydrating and protecting, building your routine becomes effortless—and every product you use works even better.

Skincare Steps

The basic steps of skincare are makeup removal, cleansing, targeted treatments, hydration (both water-based and oil-based) and sun protection.

A morning routine can include any of these except makeup removal, while an evening routine can include any of them except sun protection.

Skincare starts with cleansing and ends with a cream or sunscreen, but the other steps can mostly be arranged in the order you prefer. A common guideline is to layer products from the lightest to the richest texture.

Building your skincare routine

Creating your own skincare routine can feel challenging, as it depends on how many steps you want, your skin type, your concerns and your personal preferences.

A good place to start is by choosing a cleanser and a moisturizer that suit your skin, then considering if you need anything extra. And remember—you can always ask us for help in finding the right products!

Cleansing the skin

Cleansing can be done with either one or two products. In a double cleanse, the skin is first washed with an oil-based product (such as a cleansing balm or oil) and then followed by a water-based product (such as a gel, cream or milk cleanser).

We especially recommend double cleansing if you wear makeup. It is effective because it ensures your skin is thoroughly clean, removing both oil- and water-based impurities as well as makeup. If you don’t wear makeup or only use very light makeup, cleansing with just a water-based product is enough.

Moisturizing the skin

The skin needs both hydration (water) and moisture (oil). All skin types benefit from hydration, but some may be especially dehydrated and require more water-based care.

Not every skin type needs additional oil-based moisture—if your skin is already oily, lightweight hydration is usually enough. However, if your skin is dry, it will need more oil-based nourishment. In any case, it’s important not to skip moisturizer, as every skin benefits from one, whether it’s a rich cream or a light gel texture.

Exfoliating the skin

The skin naturally sheds dead cells, but sometimes it needs a little help. Dead skin buildup can make the complexion look dull and clog pores, which may lead to breakouts and blackheads.

Exfoliating acids are a gentle way to loosen the bonds between dead skin cells so they shed on their own. Regular exfoliation helps brighten, smooth, and cleanse the skin—making it beneficial for all skin types.

How often should you exfoliate? It depends on your product and skin type. Gentle exfoliants can often be used daily, while stronger formulas are best kept to 1–3 times per week.
